5 Common Borehole Issues and How to Fix Them

Boreholes are a reliable source of water for many households and businesses. However, like any mechanical system, they can encounter issues that may disrupt their performance. Here are some common borehole problems and solutions to get your water flowing again:

1. Low Water Yield

  • Cause: Depletion of the aquifer, clogged filters, or a poorly designed borehole.
  • Solution:
    • Recharge the Aquifer: Implement water conservation measures and avoid excessive pumping.
    • Clean the Filters: Hire a professional to clean or replace the filters.
    • Redrill the Borehole: In severe cases, consider deepening the borehole or drilling a new one.

2. Water Quality Problems

  • Cause: Contamination from surface runoff, mineral deposits, or bacterial growth.
  • Solution:
    • Install a Water Treatment System: Use filters, chlorination, or UV disinfection to purify the water.
    • Regular Maintenance: Clean the borehole and pump regularly to prevent contamination.
    • Conduct Water Testing: Regularly test the water quality to identify and address any issues.

3. Pump Failure

  • Cause: Mechanical wear and tear, power surges, or incorrect installation.
  • Solution:
    • Regular Maintenance: Schedule regular inspections and servicing of the pump.
    • Install a Surge Protector: Protect the pump from power fluctuations.
    • Replace Worn Parts: Replace any damaged or worn-out components.

4. Sand Ingress

  • Cause: Loose borehole casing, worn-out pump components, or excessive pumping.
  • Solution:
    • Repair the Casing: Seal any gaps or cracks in the casing.
    • Replace Pump Components: Replace worn-out impellers and other components.
    • Reduce Pumping Rate: Lower the pumping rate to reduce stress on the borehole.

5. Noise and Vibration

  • Cause: Cavitation, misalignment, or worn-out bearings.
  • Solution:
    • Check Pump Alignment: Ensure the pump is properly aligned with the motor.
    • Replace Worn Bearings: Replace any damaged bearings.
    • Adjust Pump Settings: Adjust the pump's settings to reduce cavitation.

Fact 1: Know Your Borehole Casings

The Preferred Borehole Casing In Zimbabwe Is Class 9 and 10 (Pressure Classes.)

This is because Class 9 and Class 10 Casings are more collapse resistant. The strength of a Casing is often described as collapse resistance.

Fact 2: Borehole Drilling Depth

The exact depth, of where the water is located, cannot be established by the drilling contractor nor the Water Surveyor (Borehole Siter).

Fact 3: There Is No 100% Guarantee

It is important to note that it is never a 100% guarantee that any hole will yield water, the amount and water quality can also not be guaranteed by the drilling contractor and water surveyor.

Fact 4: Siting Is Important
Fact 5: Know The Risks
