Borehole Casing And Construction With Nakiso Borehole Drilling - How Does Borehole Casing Work In Zimbabwe?

Once a borehole has been drilled, if it is to become a productive borehole, the borehole must undergo completion.

While drilling borehole cuts through the rock formations and allows drilling engineers to reach the reservoir below, the raw sides of the borehole cannot support themselves.

Similar to the bones of your spine protecting the spinal cord, the casing is tubing that is set inside the drilled well to protect and support the borehole stream.

In addition to providing stabilization and keeping the sides of the borehole from caving in on themselves, casing protects the borehole stream from outside contaminants, as well as any freshwater reservoirs from the oil or gas that is being produced.

Also known as setting pipe, casing a well involves running PVC pipes down the inside of a recently drilled borehole. The small space between the casing and the untreated sides of the borehole is filled with gravel pack and cement to permanently set the casing in place.

Casing A Borehole: Nakiso Borehole Drilling installs PVC borehole casings and screen pipes in two main sizes 140mm and 180mm in pressure classes, PN 6, PN 9 and PN 10. PVC Borehole casing are widely used because it is light, strong, easy to install, durable, corrosion-resistant and relatively inexpensive.

The Borehole Casings are manufactured with selected PVC compounds to provide absolute non-corrosive pipes with excellent mechanical properties. The Borehole Casing must be strong enough to withstand underground pressures. That is why Nakiso Borehole Drilling prefers to use Pressure Class 9 and Pressure Class 10 for Borehole Casing. This is because Pressure Class 9 and Pressure Class 10 Casings are more Collapse Resistant (The strength of a Casing is often described as Collapse Resistance.)

The choice of any material depends upon its strengths and weaknesses in relation to the particular intended use. Conditions at a Borehole Drilling site, and within a borehole, are generally aggressive.

PVC casing and screen is easily able to withstand most conditions, but it is important for a driller, engineer or hydrogeologist to be aware of conditions or circumstances that might prejudice the integrity of the PVC and consequently the borehole.

PVC is plastic. It has a low compressive and tensile strength relative to steel. It can be softened by heat, deformed by sudden or gradual stress and shattered by strong impacts.

Generally, the PVC casing is stronger than the PVC screen, and the thick-walled PVC casing is stronger than the thin-walled casing.

PVC is much more flexible than steel, therefore it should be supported, both on the ground, and in the borehole.

Determining The Strength Of PVC Borehole Casing: The strength of PVC casing is often described as collapse resistance. The strength, or collapse resistance, depends upon both the thickness of the wall of the casing and the diameter of the casing. A narrow diameter casing is stronger than a wide diameter casing with the same wall thickness.

It is more difficult to deform a narrow diameter casing.
Narrow diameter casing usually maintains a perfectly circular circumference profile.

Five Facts About Borehole Drilling That You Need To Take Note Of:
1. Know Your Borehole Casings:The Preferred Borehole Casing In Zimbabwe Is Class 9 and 10 (Pressure Classes.)This is because Class 9 and Class 10 Casings are more collapse resistant. The strength of a Casing is often described as collapse resistance.

2. Borehole Drilling Depth: The exact depth, of where the water is located, cannot be established by the drilling contractor nor the Water Surveyor (Borehole Siter).

3. The Is No 100% Guarantee On Water: It is important to note that it is never a 100% guarantee that any hole will yield water, the amount and water quality can also not be guaranteed by the drilling contractor and water surveyor.

4. Borehole Siting or Water Surveying Is Important: Making use of a hydrologist or traditional water diviner will increase your chances of having a successful borehole that will yield a sufficient amount of water.

5. Know The Risks: The risk of the borehole drilling lies with the property owner. The client will still be liable for the drilling costs irrespective of a borehole yielding water or not.
