In most African societies, women are regarded as collectors, managers and guardians of water gathering, thereby missing other life opportunities. On average, they spend 60 percent of each day collecting water.
Letwin Musonza wakes up with the sun every day. Inside her half-lit dwelling, she methodically gathers her water containers, disappearing into the darkness, towards the community borehole.
Along the way, she joins other women alongside young children destined for the same communal watering point. Walking in groups ensures security from robbers since most men rarely collect water – and if they do, it is probably for resale.
Enter ‘Waterpreneurs’ At the borehole, Letwin and her crew meet Adam Laiton, offloading his countless containers, already assured of the first position to fill his allocation. Adam has become a local waterpreneur – a term reserved for individuals fetching water and reselling it at a premium in the locality.
After a prolonged wait, sometimes interjected by shouting, Letwin gets her turn to fill her vessels in time to return home for other household chores. With the water situation getting worse, her daily routine is set to continue, until the rainy season comes, when nearby wells fill up again.
Nakiso to the Rescue: Noticing the punishing hours often endured by women in watering queues, Nakiso Borehole Drilling was launched in 2019. To date, the water provision entity has successfully completed 15 projects, offering value for money.
“We saw a persistent water problem and decided to offer a solution to the nation, especially women and children who spend long hours gathering water.
“While driving at 2am, I witnessed women and children fetching water for domestic use,” Nakiso Borehole Drilling, Chief Executive Officer, Lincoln Masiyenyama revealed.
The company has created 13 jobs, recruiting personnel with expertise in borehole drilling, spanning more than five years. Offering competitive prices, Nakiso Borehole Drilling is set to transform the water provision sector.

Nakiso in the Community: Nakiso is a Shona vernacular which means to beautify. And since Chitungwiza dormitory town, which relies on Harare for water provision was ravaged by cholera in 2008, killing thousands, the area has been devastated.
When Nakiso Borehole Drilling decided to partner with Glory Ministries in Chitungwiza by drilling a borehole, the community was excited.
“I am feeling excited because our prayer for water provision has been answered. We appreciate Nakiso Borehole Drilling for providing water as this will increase our life expectancy because three-quarters of our bodies is made up of water.
“The borehole will improve the lives of the community, while God provides people with solutions where councils have failed. We will take measures to protect the community by also protecting the community by maintaining certain norms,” declared Bishop Pride Sibiya at the borehole drilling event.
